Description
Skiathos is compact — you can drive from one end to the other in under 30 minutes — but within that small space, the experience of staying in different parts of the island is remarkably different. The Town is energy: a labyrinth of narrow lanes, bars spilling onto the Old Port, restaurants open until 2am, ferries arriving and departing at all hours, and a nightlife that is the liveliest in the Sporades. The southern coast — Achladies, Tzaneria, Vromolimnos — is a string of organized beaches with hotels that offer immediate sea access and a quieter, more resort-style rhythm. Troulos and Koukounaries, further west, are where the beach quality peaks: Koukounaries is one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, a 1.2km arc of pine-backed golden sand, and the hotels near it offer the classic Skiathos postcard experience. The northern coast is almost entirely different: wild, uncrowded, accessible mainly by boat or rough track, and almost entirely without tourist infrastructure — which is exactly why some travelers seek it out. The right base depends on what kind of trip you want. Read through the areas below before deciding.
