Where to Stay in Skiathos

Skiathos Town is where the island lives. Built on two low hills above the Old Port, it is an exceptionally pretty Aegean town: terracotta-roofed white houses, a labyrinth of cobbled lanes climbing from the waterfront, bougainvillea cascading over walls, the constant movement of boats in the harbour below. The main pedestrian strip — Papadiamantis Street, named after the great novelist born here in 1851 — runs from the port through the heart of the town and is flanked by restaurants, cafes, boutiques and bars that stay open through the night in summer. Hotels in the Koukounaries area are few and they book out early. The beach itself is partially organized but never feels overwhelmed. In the morning, before 11am, it is at its most extraordinary. The lagoon behind the beach (Strofylia) is a protected wetland and a bird-watching area. The walking trail around the lagoon is a beautiful 30-minute circuit through the pines. The area is right for you if: the beach is the primary reason for your visit and you want to wake up 5 minutes from Koukounaries. Between Achladies and Troulos lies a quieter mid-coast zone — the bays of Kanapitsa and Vromolimnos — that offers a middle ground between the energy of the Town-adjacent area and the distance of Koukounaries. The water is calm, the beaches are organized but less crowded than Achladies, and the accommodation options here tend toward relaxed, apartment-style properties popular with Greek domestic visitors.
