Where to Stay in Santorini

A guide to the best areas to stay in Santorini, comparing the caldera edge towns (Oia, Fira, Imerovigli) with the beach resorts (Kamari, Perissa).

Overview

Choosing where to stay in Santorini defines your entire experience. The island is essentially split into two worlds: the dramatic, cliffside towns offering the famous sunset views, and the more relaxed, budget-friendly beach villages on the east coast.

1

1. Oia: The iconic luxury

Oia is the postcard image of Santorini. It offers the most spectacular sunsets and luxury boutique hotels with infinity pools. However, it is also the most crowded and expensive area, especially during peak season.

2. Fira: The vibrant capital

Fira is the heart of the island's nightlife and dining scene. It still offers incredible caldera views but is busier, noisier, and serves as the main transport hub for buses across the island.

3. Imerovigli: The romantic balcony

Often called the 'balcony to the Aegean', Imerovigli sits at the highest point of the caldera. It offers the same stunning views as Oia but with much less crowd, making it perfect for honeymooners.

4. Beach Towns (Kamari & Perissa)

If you prefer to wake up and walk straight to the beach, head to the east coast. Kamari and Perissa offer black volcanic sand, family-friendly environments, and significantly lower hotel prices.
