Destination Overview

Lefkada

Lefkada is the only Greek island you can drive to without a ferry — a thin causeway and a floating bridge connect it to the mainland. That alone makes it one of the most accessible Ionian islands, yet what awaits is anything but ordinary. Towering white limestone cliffs plunge into waters so blue they seem to belong to the Caribbean. Ancient villages cling to hillsides with wooden-balconied houses painted in unexpected colors. And on the western coast, two of the most dramatic beaches in all of Greece wait at the end of winding mountain roads. This page covers everything you need to plan a complete and honest visit to Lefkada: why it stands out, when to go, how to get there, where to spend your days, what to eat, and what to skip.

Lefkada

Why visit Lefkada

1

The beaches of the western coast are genuinely world-class

Porto Katsiki and Egremni are not overhyped. The combination of near-white chalk cliffs, crystal-clear turquoise water, and the sheer scale of the landscape creates a visual experience that is difficult to find anywhere else in Greece. Both beaches require descending steep steps or a boat, which filters the crowd somewhat — but the effort is more than justified.

2

No ferry needed

Lefkada is the only Ionian island reachable by car. A short causeway and floating drawbridge connect it to the mainland. This removes ferry queues, booking pressure, and schedule constraints — a significant advantage for family trips or road trips around Greece.

3

Watersports capital of the Ionian

The Vassiliki Bay in the south is consistently ranked among Europe's top windsurfing destinations. The local wind pattern — a morning calm followed by a strong afternoon thermal breeze called 'Eric' — creates near-perfect conditions for windsurfers and kitesurfers of all levels.

4

The island has a real interior

The central mountain villages — Karya, Englouvi, Kalamitsi — offer a completely different Lefkada: cool air, stone-paved alleys, local embroidery traditions, and tavernas serving slow-cooked goat with homemade wine. The highest road passes through one of Greece's highest-altitude lentil-growing regions.

Lefkada

Best time to visit

💡 Secret: If you plan to hike to Englouvi or explore the mountain villages, May is the perfect month — wildflowers are in full bloom and the air is fresh without the summer heat.

May – June

The ideal window: mild temperatures (22–27°C), a sea warm enough for comfortable swimming, very few crowds on the beaches, and open restaurants without waiting. Hiking in the interior is at its best.

July – August

Peak season. The island is busy, Porto Katsiki fills up early, and accommodation prices reach their highest. If you visit in August, arrive at the western beaches before 10:00 AM.

September

Many experienced travelers consider September the ideal Lefkada month. The crowds thin, the sea is at its warmest (24–25°C), accommodation rates drop, and the late afternoon light on the western cliffs is extraordinary.

April & October

Excellent for nature and villages, quieter roads, and dramatically reduced prices. Swimming is possible depending on the weather. Many beach tavernas and tourist services are closed.

How to get to Lefkada

By road (from Athens)

The most common route is Athens → Corinth → Patras → Antirrio → Igoumenitsa direction, turning south at Vonitsa. Total driving time is approximately 4.5–5 hours. The road across the causeway into Lefkada Town is straightforward and well-signposted.

By air (Preveza airport)

Aktion National Airport (PVK) in Preveza is approximately 20–25 km from Lefkada Town. The airport serves domestic flights from Athens and international charter flights during summer. A taxi or rental car is the most practical option.

Getting around

A car is essential to experience Lefkada fully. The western beaches require a mountain road drive, the villages are scattered, and public transport is very limited outside Lefkada Town. Rent a car at the airport or in Preveza.

Lefkada

Top attractions & experiences

1

Porto Katsiki

The most photographed beach in Lefkada. A steep descent of approximately 100+ steps leads down to a pebble-and-sand beach enclosed by towering white chalk cliffs. The water is an intense turquoise. Access is also possible by boat from Nydri or Vassiliki — the sea view of the cliffs from a boat is a completely different perspective.

2

Egremni Beach

A few kilometers north of Porto Katsiki, Egremni is longer, wilder, and still feels remote. A descent of around 350 steps leads to the beach. The cliff colours shift between white, grey, and pale orange depending on the light. Check conditions locally before descending as the area was affected by a 2015 earthquake.

3

Kathisma Beach

The most family-friendly of Lefkada's famous beaches, on the northwest coast with a paved road. Long stretch of soft sand with organised facilities, sunbeds, beach bars, and shallow entry. Sunsets at Kathisma are among the best on the island.

4

Vassiliki & windsurfing

The bay of Vassiliki is a world-renowned windsurfing destination. The local thermal wind 'Eric' arrives reliably in the afternoon, creating ideal conditions. Numerous schools offer courses from beginner to advanced. Non-windsurfers will find calm clear water and excellent fish tavernas.

5

Nydri & the waterfalls

Nydri on the east coast is the island's main tourist hub and departure point for boat excursions to the surrounding islets. About 3 km inland are the Nydri Waterfalls — freshwater cascades accessible by a short walk through a gorge. Best in spring and early summer when water levels are high.

6

Karya & the mountain villages

Karya is the largest mountain village and the cultural heart of the interior. Famous for Lefkadian embroidery and one of the most atmospheric village squares on the island. Nearby Englouvi, at 800m elevation, is the highest village and home to an annual lentil festival in August.

Lefkada

Top beaches

💡 Secret: The western beaches involve significant stair descents. Wear appropriate footwear, carry water, and consider the return climb before you descend — especially with children or in peak midday heat.

Porto Katsiki

For the iconic cliff-and-turquoise-water combination. Arrive early (before 10:00 in July–August) or take a boat from Nydri or Vassiliki to avoid the crowd at the top of the stairs.

Egremni

For a wilder, longer alternative to Porto Katsiki. The staircase descent is longer (350 steps) but the reward is a beach that still feels genuinely remote and undisturbed.

Kathisma

For families, sunsets, and a long stretch of soft sand with full facilities. Walk south past the organized section for progressively quieter conditions.

Mylos Beach

A small pebble cove near Agios Nikitas on the northwest coast, accessible on foot. One of the most picturesque and low-key spots on the island.

Pefkoulia

North of Kathisma, a quieter sandy beach with a dramatic cliff backdrop and largely local crowd. Excellent for late afternoon swimming when the light turns golden.

Lefkada

Local food & drink

💡 Secret: The smaller the taverna and the further from the main tourist strip, the more genuine the experience. Ask for whatever came in that morning rather than ordering from a fixed menu.

Lefkadian sofrito

Thin veal slices slow-cooked in white wine, garlic, and vinegar sauce. Rich, fragrant, and best eaten with thick bread. Found in traditional tavernas throughout the island.

Kreatopita (meat pie)

A hearty baked pie filled with minced meat, rice, and local herbs. Found in bakeries and traditional kafeneions, particularly in the mountain villages. The version in Karya is considered among the best.

Englouvi lentils

The lentils grown in the high-altitude plain of Englouvi are among the finest in Greece — small, firm, and intensely flavoured. They appear in soups, salads, and as a side dish. The August festival celebrates them.

Fresh fish

Both Nydri and Vassiliki have fish tavernas where the catch of the day is displayed. The smaller tavernas away from the main strip offer the most genuine experience.

Practical tips

Plan your western beach days around timing

Porto Katsiki and Egremni are most manageable before 10:00 AM or after 16:00. Midday combines maximum heat, maximum crowds, and the hardest stair return climb.

Book accommodation early for August

Lefkada's accessibility by road makes it extremely popular with Greek and Italian families during the first two weeks of August. Good accommodation fills up months in advance.

The mountain roads require patience

The road to Porto Katsiki from Lefkada Town takes approximately 45–55 minutes and involves narrow sections with oncoming traffic. Do not underestimate the driving time.

Agios Nikitas vehicle access

The road into the village is closed to general traffic during high season. Park outside and walk in (10–15 minutes). This preserves the village character and is part of its appeal.

Lefkada

What to skip — honest advice

💡 What nobody tells you: Lefkada's west-coast cliff beaches are genuinely exposed to afternoon wind. The same thermal breeze that makes Vassiliki world-class for windsurfing also whips up wave action on Porto Katsiki and Egremni from early afternoon onwards. The morning window is not just about avoiding crowds — it is the only time the sea is genuinely still.

Driving to Porto Katsiki mid-day in August

The parking area fills completely, leaving cars lined along the roadside for 1–2 km. The beach below is at its most crowded. Choose a morning visit or come by boat.

Expecting Nydri to be authentic

Nydri is the island's busiest tourist strip — restaurants, souvenir shops, and boat agencies lined up for 500 metres. Use it as a functional base or departure point, not as a gastronomic destination. Eat in Lefkada Town or the villages instead.

Doing Porto Katsiki and Egremni in one morning

Both involve significant descents and climbs. Doing both in one session in summer heat is exhausting. Dedicate a full morning to one and visit the other on a separate day.

Ignoring Vassiliki if not a windsurfer

Non-windsurfers often skip Vassiliki, but the bay has some of the calmest water on the south coast, excellent fish tavernas, and a relaxed atmosphere that contrasts well with the busier east coast.
